The Virginian-Pilot reported that the two were not dating and Sierra Jenkins was in her pajamas due to just having returned from a nearby gym. The newspaper also reported that police identified the shooter as a Virginia Tech student. Jonathan Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting while Sierra Jenkins was taken to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Jenkins, who had also freelanced for The New York Times and worked at public relations firm Weber Shandwick, was always willing to jump in and get her hands dirty on a story.

Because Sierra was a well-liked rising senior at Hampton High School and had begun her internship at the newspaper this summer, a special vigil was held for her. She is being remembered not just as a talented and ambitious student and reporter, but also as a friend to her friends and family members. Friends like Bobby Burdette, Sierra’s longtime friend, and classmate. Burdette said that she will remember Sierra for having great customer service skills, which made her an excellent employee once she began working at the store, she and her mom co-owned.
