After graduating in 1959, he joined the marine corps services and worked as a field artillery officer. Later after serving about 13 years, he then was appointed to the White House of legislative affairs. He was first the military assistant to Henry Kissinger. Later for serving about 8 years, in 1979, he was appointed as the Deputy national security by Ronald Reagan and he served there for 3-4 years. After which he was accused of involvement in the armed forces of the US in the Lebanon Civil war. Later the Iran controversy he resigned from his post. He was accused and jailed for two years in the Iran controversy in which he was accused of secretly settling arms with Iran.

Robert dies due to the chronic lung disease he was battling with. His family gave out the information while speaking publicly. The deceased when accused in the Iran scandal tried to attempt suicide but was luckily saved. For his family, he was still loved and appreciated. His family while speaking to the press said that we as a family are here to announce the death of Robert. He was loved as a husband, father, and grandfather from us. He had a profound impact on our lives. His family consisted of his wife, and three children namely Lauren, Melissa, and Scott.

He had two sisters and eight grandchildren. He had his own international business company which was related to consulting and specializing in energy issues. He initiated the company after he got off from his governmental duties. His family said that though he was a political thinker, an officer at Marine. But he will still be there in our hearts and will be remembered for his warmth, love, kindness, helping and serving others, and belief in god.
